The Department of the Environment has announced the installation of two insect hotels in Orihuela’s municipal allotments to support biodiversity and enhance ecological balance in the municipality. These structures are designed to provide shelter for various species, including solitary bees, ladybugs, and green lacewings, which play a crucial role in pollination and natural pest control.
One of the hotels, the larger of the two, has been strategically placed facing north to minimize sun exposure. It has also been elevated to prevent direct contact with the ground, reducing moisture and increasing its durability. The second, smaller insect hotel complements the first by offering additional refuge spaces for insects.
Beyond their ecological benefits, these insect hotels will serve as an educational tool to raise awareness about the importance of insects in maintaining natural balance. The initiative promotes sustainable practices and environmental stewardship while contributing to the overall health of the local ecosystem.
