EasyJet, now the second-busiest airline at Alicante-Elche Airport, has announced the cancellation of one of its routes to the UK. While the airline will continue serving northern Great Britain, it will no longer operate flights to one of its previously connected airports.
The airline has seen a 12% increase in passenger numbers since opening its base at the Alicante terminal last spring. As part of its expansion, EasyJet will introduce two new routes to southern Europe, adding flights to Naples (extended for the high season) and Athens, a brand-new destination at the airport this summer.
However, despite this growth, EasyJet has decided to discontinue a connection to one UK city. The airline will continue flying to Belfast, but it will no longer serve Belfast International Airport, maintaining only its flights to Belfast City Airport.
The discontinued route was introduced last year with the opening of EasyJet’s base in Alicante and had two weekly flights. Despite its cancellation, EasyJet still offers three weekly flights to Belfast George Best Airport via its website.
NEW FLIGHTS AND SCHEDULE CHANGES
EasyJet will launch flights to Naples and Athens from Alicante-Elche Airport for the first time. Meanwhile, passengers can still travel to Belfast International Airport on specific dates:
October 26 at 7:20 AM (arrival at 9:25 AM)
October 30 at 3:30 PM (arrival at 5:35 PM)
November 2 at 7:20 AM
Despite canceling the Belfast International route, EasyJet is actually increasing its overall Belfast service, operating daily flights starting this March. In July, the airline will boost its schedule to nine flights per week, adding double frequencies on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
OTHER ROUTE CANCELLATIONS AT ALICANTE-ELCHE AIRPORT
EasyJet is not the only airline adjusting its services ahead of the summer season. Several other carriers have also announced route cancellations:
Ryanair has suspended its connection to Santander due to disagreements over regional airport fees with AENA. It has also discontinued flights to Billund, Denmark’s “LEGO city” and one of its early routes from Alicante.
Vueling has dropped flights to Santiago, Rome, and Zurich. However, EasyJet has stepped in to cover Zurich, increasing its weekly flights to four.
Despite these cancellations, Alicante-Elche Airport continues to see growth in international travel, with airlines expanding their overall operations for the high season.
