The airline has discontinued direct connections to two European cities and one northern Spanish destination for the summer season.
Alicante-Elche Airport is gearing up for a promising summer, with more than 14.7 million available seats. Most airlines are expanding their services, increasing flight frequencies, and adding new destinations. Ryanair, for instance, is introducing flights to Austria and Poland, while EasyJet is launching connections to Athens and Naples.
Among the airlines transporting the highest number of passengers, Vueling is maintaining a seat capacity similar to last summer. However, this year, it will no longer operate flights to three of its previous destinations from Alicante-Elche Airport.
The Barcelona-based airline has cancelled its routes to Santiago de Compostela, Rome, and Zurich. Despite these cancellations, travellers will still have access to these destinations through other airlines.
- Rome-Fiumicino Airport: From March 30, Ryanair and Wizz Air will operate this route.
- Zurich Airport: EasyJet and Swiss International Airlines will provide flights.
- Santiago de Compostela: Ryanair and Alba Star will continue servicing this route.
Vueling previously had a strong presence on the international routes it has now cut. In 2024, 214,614 passengers travelled between Alicante and Rome-Fiumicino Airport, with Vueling carrying 59,158 passengers (27.5%) on 323 flights.
For Zurich, 169,977 passengers used the route, with Vueling accounting for 39,822 travellers (23.4%) across 246 flights. The airline competed with EasyJet, which introduced the route last summer, and Swiss Air, which operates it year-round.
Vueling continues its strategy of prioritizing connections via stopovers in Barcelona, where it is headquartered. As a result, reaching these destinations with Vueling now requires an additional transfer, making direct travel less convenient.
Meanwhile, other airlines are stepping in:
- Ryanair will maintain five weekly flights to Rome, while Wizz Air will operate four weekly flights.
- EasyJet will run four weekly flights to Zurich starting in mid-April, while Swiss will offer daily flights.
