Vox has withdrawn a motion in Orihuela that sought to increase financial aid to Church-linked groups, including Holy Week subsidies, putting the PP in a difficult position.
Despite previously accusing the PP of endangering these funds, Vox initially proposed increasing the Junta de Cofradías’ subsidy to €180,000 and granting €25,000 each to Cáritas and the San José Obrero Diocesan Foundation. However, the party postponed the motion, arguing that debates on International Women’s Day (8M) would overshadow it.
This move follows tensions between Vox and the PP after the latter abstained from a motion condemning homophobic statements by Bishop José Ignacio Munilla.
Vox criticised the PP for allegedly withdrawing municipal aid to the Church and failing to protect religious traditions. The far-right party insists that supporting the Catholic Church is essential due to its cultural and social contributions in Orihuela.
Meanwhile, all parties except Vox have backed a joint motion for 8M, reaffirming commitments to gender equality. Cambiemos has also called out far-right rhetoric for undermining feminism and democratic rights, urging the City Council to maintain gender-focused policies despite Vox’s influence.
