Spanish adventurer and TV presenter Jesús Calleja has successfully completed his journey to space, becoming the third Spaniard to do so, following Miguel López-Alegría and Pedro Duque. He is also the first to achieve this feat without being a professional astronaut.
Calleja travelled aboard Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket, which launched at 4:50 p.m. and safely landed just over ten minutes later in the Texas desert. The rocket, carrying six crew members, accelerated to 3,750 km/h within seconds, propelled by engines powered by hydrogen and oxygen, emitting only water vapor.
During the flight, the booster module separated, allowing the capsule to soar over 100 kilometres above Earth’s surface. Before experiencing gravity again, passengers had to secure themselves in their seats for re-entry.
A DREAM COME TRUE
Jesús Calleja’s space journey was part of a collaboration between Mediaset and Amazon Prime Video, where he stars in a special program documenting his experience. “I want to carry the Spanish flag into space,” Calleja said during the show’s presentation.
The presenter has long dreamed of becoming an astronaut. “As a child, I was obsessed with space—I even had to see a psychologist because of it,” he admitted. “There is no challenge greater than this,” he added.
THE SPACE MISSION DOCUMENTARY
The entire mission was broadcast live on Informativos Telecinco, presented by Carlos Franganillo and María Casado. Additionally, Calleja’s space adventure will be featured in a three-episode special on Prime Video, covering:
- His preparation for the mission, including interviews with astronauts and industry experts.
- The space flight itself, lasting between 10 to 15 minutes.
- The landing and post-flight reflection.
With this journey, Jesús Calleja has cemented his place in Spanish space history—an extraordinary achievement for an adventurer who never stopped chasing his childhood dream.
