The La Marina Golf Society commenced their match at 11.00am at Lo Romero, one of our favourite venues on the Costa Blanca where the course was once again immaculate. The format included two teams balanced by handicap, with the Captain, Alan Craig, and Vice-Captain, Sue Lyall, drawing a team of players on the first tee.
This event featured many couples, including the Captain and Vice-Captain. As it was Valentine’s week, the random draw added an interesting dynamic to the competition. The format was better ball Stableford, with each pair competing in a matchplay format within each 4-ball group.
The result was calculated in a Ryder Cup format, awarding one point for a winning pair and half a point for a draw.
The presentation took place at Lo Romero, where a number of bushes were trimmed into heart shapes with red lights, acknowledging February 14th. The scores among the 24 participants were impressive, with one-third of players recording 36 points or better.
Results:
· Nearest the pin on hole 5: Gerry McCabe
· Nearest the pin on hole 7: Marco Eckart
· Nearest the pin on hole 12: Sue Lyall
· Nearest the pin on hole 15: Dave Freeman
There were no 2s today, so the 2s pot will roll over again for Alicante on March 6th, with the first tee at 10.00am. Dave Slightam had a notable achievement, with his ball taking just THREE shots to find the hole and complete the 495m par 5 sixth hole and record a very rare eagle on his scorecard. Dave was rewarded when a gigantic hip flask appeared full of whiskey and his achievement was celebrated by his fellow players before teeing off on the 7th.
A voucher was awarded for the best individual Stableford points score in each team. Jeff Wisniewski scored 44 points (hcp34) for the Vice-Captain’s team, and Iain Lyall scored 43 points (hcp25) for the Captain’s team.
The Captain’s team won the day by 4 points to 2, despite the Vice-Captain’s victory over the Captain in their individual game.
Congratulations to the Captain’s team. Players are reminded that after the Alicante game on March 6th, there will be a presentation at the Sports Complex. Further information is available at lamarinagolfsociety.eu.
