Two former officials have filed a complaint with the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office against Orihuela’s Secretary General, Virgilio Estremera, accusing him of alleged document falsification, administrative misconduct, illegal appointments, and influence peddling to benefit his wife, María Teresa Almela.

The complaint claims that Almela was unlawfully appointed to various municipal positions, including treasurer and municipal intervener, despite not meeting the required qualifications.

The officials argue that Estremera manipulated records, influenced city authorities, and facilitated an allegedly illegal job transfer for Almela to Orihuela.

They claim she was falsely classified as an A-1 level official, a requirement for her positions, when she only holds an A-2 status.

The appointment process allegedly lacked transparency and violated merit-based hiring principles, leading to complaints from labour unions.

The prosecution has requested documentation from the City Council within 15 days. Meanwhile, municipal sources defend Almela’s qualifications stating that all procedures were legal, dismissing the allegations as completely unfounded.
