Efforts are underway to resolve water leakage issues affecting a building on la calle Temístocles Almagro.

Investigation and Findings

The issue, dating back to the building’s construction in 2003, required an in-depth investigation to determine the source of the leaks. Initial checks confirmed that the municipal water supply and drainage systems were not responsible.

In December, a specialized inspection of a nearby irrigation canal revealed that a non-waterproofed brick extension, built during urban development, was allowing water infiltration when irrigation levels rose. A recorded visual inspection provided clear evidence of the problem’s location.

Planned Solutions

A waterproofing treatment will be applied immediately to the affected area of the canal. If leaks persist, further sections will be examined. Due to the confined space and the need to coordinate with irrigation schedules, the project involves added complexity.

The community of property owners had previously received compensation from the building contractor and will use these funds to repair damages caused by moisture after the leaks are resolved.

Clarification on Structural Safety

Town officials have dismissed recent false rumours suggesting the building is structurally unsafe. Images circulating of a crack actually depict an expansion joint, a standard feature in construction. The Urban Planning Department has found no risk, and there is no need for evacuation.

Responsibility and Funding

The Orihuela Town Hall will cover the repair costs, as per an agreement with the Water Court, making the administration responsible for the upper structure of covered canals. The project will also include reinforcing the lower canal structure, which has shown signs of corrosion.
