The Orihuela City Council has launched a tender for the collection, care, and management of lost, abandoned, or confiscated animals in the town’s animal protection centre.
The contract, valued at €779,392.50 over a three-year period, covers the operation of the facility, which has been run for many years by the non-profit organization, Asoka.
Located in the Lo Arques area of San Bartolomé, near the Vega Baja Hospital on the CV-91, the centre can accommodate up to 192 dogs, 74 cats, and various other animals, including livestock.
The service will ensure the collection of abandoned animals across the entire municipality, including Orihuela’s urban centre, districts, and Orihuela Costa.
The Municipal Veterinarian, part of the Health Service, will oversee the management of the facility. They will ensure that the contracted company or entity strictly adheres to current regulations and contract provisions. Full access to all facilities and documentation will be granted for monitoring purposes.
24/7 ANIMAL COLLECTION AND TRANSPORT
The successful bidder will be responsible for the round-the-clock collection and transport of abandoned animals found on public roads, operating 24/7, including Sundays and holidays. The City Council will integrate designated personnel into the centre’s structure to assist with the collection of dogs and cats, though the contractor must also have its own staff for these duties.
Animal collection requests can be made by calling the designated phone number between 8:30 AM and 7:00 PM. Outside these hours, collections will be carried out upon request from the relevant authorities (Local Police, security forces, etc.), with proper documentation recorded in the official report.
The contractor must maintain constant communication with authorities, providing the Local Police and Health Service with an up-to-date list of responsible personnel, including their contact details and work schedules. The designated service coordinator must always be reachable and must appoint a replacement in case of absence.
