Local government expresses frustration over the continued disregard for the longstanding demand to make the Los Montesinos-Villamartín stretch toll-free, at least during peak season.
The Orihuela City Council has once again voiced its discontent with the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, accusing it of ignoring the long-standing demand from residents and visitors for toll-free access to the AP-7 stretch between Los Montesinos and Villamartín-La Zenia, particularly during the high season.
Councilor for Infrastructure Víctor Valverde expressed frustration, stating, “We’ve lost count of how many times we’ve requested this, yet we still receive no response.” He welcomed the government’s recent decision to extend the toll exemption for the El Campello-Monforte section, arguing that if such measures can be implemented to ease congestion there, the same should apply to Vega Baja, where the N-332 and CV-95 suffer from chronic traffic jams, especially in summer.

Valverde highlighted that the AP-7 in this area sees only about 6,000 vehicles daily, mainly due to the high toll cost of over €9 for just 7 kilometers. Meanwhile, the N-332 carries more than 40,000 vehicles per day and experiences severe traffic jams during peak season.
The Ministry of Transport, led by Óscar Puente, has acknowledged the benefits of eliminating tolls in El Campello, citing reduced congestion and improved road safety. “If this reasoning applies there, it should also apply to the Vega Baja region, where traffic conditions are just as bad, if not worse, at certain times of the year,” Valverde concluded.
