A number of local municipalities are collaborating in a new association designed to provide them with a stronger voice.
Cartagena, La Unión, Los Alcázares, San Javier, San Pedro del Pinatar, and Torre Pacheco are joining forces to defend their common interests and projects in the area.
Unity, defence of shared projects, and collaboration with national and regional administrations are some of the core principles behind the creation of the Association of Municipalities of the Campo de Cartagena and Mar Menor, which includes Cartagena, La Unión, Los Alcázares, San Javier, San Pedro del Pinatar, and Torre Pacheco, now in the final stages of formation.
This new organization is expected to be officially established next week with a meeting of all the founding mayors.
During the first meeting, the association’s governing bodies and president will be elected. This council, composed of the mayors, will be the highest authority and the voice of the association, making decisions by majority vote.
To form the association, the municipalities must have ratified their intention to join in their respective municipal councils and appointed their representatives.
Each municipality will be represented in the General Assembly by one person, the mayor or their designated delegate, who will have voting rights to decide on the association’s actions.
The main objectives of the new organisation are to defend the common interests of its member municipalities, foster collaboration between the municipalities of the Campo de Cartagena to promote territorial integration, develop shared projects, and seek funding to carry them out.
They also aim to strengthen ties with similar associations and collaborate with regional and national administrations on matters relating to the protection and promotion of municipal interests.
The activities they plan to develop include initiating projects to improve and defend the common interests of the member municipalities, organizing activities to encourage the exchange of experiences between municipalities, and promoting meetings between municipalities from other regions. They also aim to seek funding for joint projects.
Cartagena will serve as the administrative headquarters of the organisation, while the institutional headquarters will be at the town hall of the municipality holding the presidency at any given time.
Speaking to the Spanish press, Mario Cervera, the mayor of Los Alcázares, said that this union is “great news for the towns in the Mar Menor and Cartagena region.”
“In Los Alcázares, we have been trying for years to create this inter-administrative body that would allow us to work together to improve the quality of life for residents and, above all, address issues collectively, responding to demands from other administrations,” said Cervera.
“United, we are stronger, and the creation of this association will mark a turning point in institutional relations between neighbouring municipalities and the region, helping to attract significant investments, major projects, and, most importantly, resolving the big problems our region faces,” he added.
Similarly, Joaquín Cervera, the mayor of La Unión, said, “We are studying this idea to create a forum where we can bring together everything that unites us and, together, demand and advocate for the needs we have as a region and as neighbouring municipalities.”
