The Generalitat Valenciana has declared the Cabo Roig (Orihuela) coastline a Special Conservation Zone (ZEC) under the Natura 2000 Network, recognizing it’s environmental significance. Previously designated as a Place of Community Importance (LIC), this area is now protected to preserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable coexistence between human activity and habitat conservation.

This decision includes management standards to meet the ecological needs of species and habitats, fulfilling a long-standing regional demand. Autonomous Secretary of the Environment, Raúl Mérida, emphasized the importance of this measure, calling it a “historic milestone” that enhances the area’s environmental sustainability.

Cabo Roig faced another issue last year due to the deteriorating condition of palm trees. The Orihuela City Council initiated emergency measures to prune and maintain the affected trees, prioritising public safety in the most impacted areas.
