PIOC PRESS RELEASE
This week brought promising news for Orihuela Costa: the prospect of a new private hospital and it’s growing population. These developments reflect the increasing importance and potential of our town.
Ribera Salud has expressed interest in building a private hospital in Orihuela Costa, recognizing the area’s rapid growth and demand for better services. Orihuela Costa is expanding, with an average annual growth of 1,100 to 1,300 new residents, compared to just 250 in Orihuela city.
In January 2024, our population stood at 28,000, and by January 2025, it’s estimated to reach 29,300, closing in on Orihuela Centre’s 32,900 residents. By 2027, Orihuela Costa will likely have as many registered residents as Orihuela Centre, and by 2045, it could surpass the rest of Orihuela combined.
Orihuela Costa currently has 60,000 properties, projected to grow to 80,000 by 2045. Meanwhile, housing in the rest of Orihuela is stagnant or even declining. If more people move here permanently, the population could reach 80,000 by 2045, excluding seasonal residents. These trends highlight Orihuela Costa’s importance and justify calls for independence and better services.
The Path to Independence
Orihuela Costa generates €60 million in revenue for Orihuela but only receives €20 million in return. This imbalance underscores the need for independence. By securing councillors through PIOC and addressing apathy about registering and voting, Orihuela Costa can gain greater influence in the council. With independence, we could reinvest approximately €15 million annually into the town, transforming it into a prosperous and thriving community.
To achieve this, we need to address voter registration issues, especially for European and British residents. PIOC is working with the European Commission and British Government to simplify voting rights and is collaborating with other groups across Spain and Europe.
The New Private Hospital
The proposed hospital will bring much-needed healthcare services, reduce reliance on Torrevieja, and create up to 1,000 local jobs, diversifying Orihuela Costa’s economy beyond tourism. However, PIOC insists that the town hall secure proper compensation for providing the land and ensure employment opportunities for local residents. We will also review agreements for other projects, like the nursing home in Villamartín, to ensure transparency.
A Call to Action
PIOC will continue fighting for a better Orihuela Costa, including extended healthcare services, 24-hour ambulance coverage, new schools, and cultural centres. But we cannot do it alone. We need residents to register on the padrón, vote, and support our efforts.
Together, we can secure the services we deserve and build a brighter future for Orihuela Costa. United, we can achieve independence and prosperity.
