ELCHE AND THADER PLAYERS SUFFER RACIAL ABUSE AT THE WEEKEND
Former Preston North End and Sheffield Wednesday defender Bambo Diaby has condemned racist abuse directed at him during Elche’s Segunda Division match against Sporting Gijón. Labelling the behaviour as “despicable,” the 27-year-old has called for “strong sanctions” against those responsible.
The incident occurred on Saturday at El Molinón, where Diaby, an unused substitute for the match, was subjected to racist insults from an individual in the stands. Despite not being on the pitch, Diaby confronted the abuse with admirable composure and dignity, directly addressing the perpetrator. Footage from the stadium captured Diaby making a praying gesture toward the stands while engaging with the individual.
According to reports, Diaby alerted the referee to the incident, leading to a brief halt in the game. The former Barnsley and PNE player also highlighted the presence of children near the offender, emphasizing the broader impact of such behaviour. An official complaint was later filed with the police, and the Unidad Central Operativa has since confirmed the allegations.
Taking to social media platform X, Diaby expressed his disappointment, writing:
“Although they do not represent the @RealSporting fans, receiving racist insults in 2025 forces me to point out the culprits and demand strong sanctions. Thanks to my teammates, the club, and all of you for your support and messages.”
Elche head coach Eder Sarabia also addressed the incident during his post-match comments:
“One of the first things that must be eliminated from the world of football, of sport, and of this society. We appreciate you deeply, Bambo. We are fortunate to have someone like you on our team.”
CD THADER PLAYER KONE ALSO RACIALLY ABUSED
Meanwhile CD Thader has also issued a club announcement condemning racism following their match against SC Torrevieja on Sunday. The announcement reads:
Thader Sports Club expresses its strongest rejection and condemnation towards the racist insult, by a rival player, towards our player Kone during the disputed match today morning.
Today there was an unfortunate incident in our municipal field “Moi Gomez”… We had to watch one of our players break down in tears after racist insults from an opposing player.
From the Thader Sports Club we trust that the relevant institutions will take measures to eradicate such improper performances from the times we live in.
Kone, this is your club, this is your home and Thader fans are your family. We are with you and will support you always.
We will never forget the moment in which you were facing the situation, when the game was going to be suspended and when you yourself, decided that the game was to go on, when none of us had the strength to go on.
Kone, you are an example to all of us!!!!
These two incidents add to the ongoing challenges football faces in eradicating racism from the sport. The courageous responses from both Diaby and Kone have drawn widespread support, reinforcing the need for firm action to ensure that football remains an inclusive and respectful environment for all.
