TalkSPORT’s Darren Bent has strongly argued that Wrexham should be expelled from the EFL if they participate in a proposed revamped Welsh League Cup. This comes after news that the Welsh FA, alongside Wrexham, Cardiff City, Swansea City, and Newport County, is planning a new domestic competition with a spot in the UEFA Conference League up for grabs.
The new cup would feature the four EFL clubs competing against 12 teams from Wales’ top flight. The winning team would qualify for European competition, which could offer significant financial rewards, a tempting prospect for Wrexham’s American owners, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.
The plans have been presented to UEFA, as well as the Welsh and UK governments, and await approval. However, Bent expressed strong opposition, insisting that Wrexham should not “backdoor” their way into Europe while being part of the EFL. He argued the club should be expelled from the EFL if they pursue the competition.
Welsh FA chief Noel Mooney, defending the move, stated that it would transform Welsh football, improve grassroots facilities, and boost the women’s game. He criticized opponents of the plan, questioning why they would want to hinder Welsh football’s growth. The Welsh FA’s plan includes reinvesting £1 million of the prize money into the Welsh Premier League and reviewing the competition after four years.
The 16-team League Cup is set to begin in the 2025-26 season, with single-leg knockout rounds. The EFL is expected to oppose the initiative.
