The Mayor of Los Alcázares, Mario Pérez Cervera, met with President of the Region of Murcia, Fernando López Miras, to address pressing issues in health, education, and infrastructure.
This marks the first meeting between the two politicians in five years, during which Pérez Cervera highlighted the town’s urgent needs, particularly the demand for a 24-hour Health Centre, improved educational facilities, and upgrades to essential infrastructure like the fire station.
The mayor emphasised the long-standing health care challenges faced by the municipality, where the current Health Centre operates with limited hours, leaving residents underserved. He urged the regional government to establish a 24-hour Primary Care Emergency Service (SUAP), which would also benefit nearby towns such as Los Urrutias and Los Nietos.
Pérez Cervera stressed that these improvements would significantly alleviate pressure on the overstretched SUAP in San Javier.
Education was another critical focus of the meeting. While the regional government has committed to several educational projects, the mayor pushed for expedited implementation, citing the urgent need to address overcrowded classrooms and deteriorating conditions in schools.
He presented a detailed report on deficiencies in the Antonio Ménarguez Costa Institute, underscoring the growing strain on educational resources due to the town’s rising population.
Flooding issues were also discussed, particularly the runoff from the RM-F26 regional road, which has intensified due to recent channelling projects. Pérez Cervera called for upstream solutions to manage and repurpose runoff water, preventing further harm to the Mar Menor and the town’s beaches.
The deteriorating state of the 35-year-old Los Alcázares Fire Station was another key topic. Despite a prior regional pledge of €900,000 for upgrades, no progress has been made. The mayor described the situation as unsustainable and called for immediate intervention.
Additionally, Pérez Cervera highlighted the municipality’s plans to open a Day Centre for the elderly, offering social and care services for 40 residents.
While the project is funded by the local council, he urged the regional government to share costs. He also stressed the need to upgrade the RM-F30 road linking Torre Pacheco and Los Alcázares to improve traffic flow and safety.
In closing, the mayor presented López Miras with a symbolic gift representing Los Alcázares as the cradle of Spanish hydro-aviation, celebrating the town’s resilience and its significant contributions to the region.
