Pilar de la Horadada anticipates its new Museum, Musical, and Performing Arts Centres (CAMME) to be open ahead of Easter. To facilitate this, the City Council has put out a public tender for the furniture and equipment required for the facility, allocating a budget of €537,431.
Final Preparations Underway
The first phase of the project is nearing completion, and this latest contract aims to finalize the necessary furnishings to ensure the centre is operational by Easter. According to municipal forecasts, the thrones for the Easter processions will be housed at the new facility in time for the season’s celebrations.
A Vast 11,000-Square-Metre Complex
The CAMME project spans an impressive 11,000 square Metres, including areas designated for future development. As a guide the size of an average football pitch measures approximately 7500 metres. The site is located between Avenida Reina Sofía, Avenida Lo Alegre, and Calle Los Lebreles. The Council initially tendered the construction of phases 1 and 3 of the complex in November 2021.
These two phases focus on constructing the primary buildings designed to accommodate the House of Culture and the Easter Museum, key features of the new cultural hub.
Blending Culture and Education
The CAMME will serve not only as a cultural space but also as an educational resource. One of the buildings will be fully dedicated to the Easter Museum, showcasing exhibits that celebrate the region’s rich traditions.
The second building will accommodate the offices for municipal departments of Culture and Education. It will also house five training classrooms for courses approved by Convega, a significant improvement from the municipality’s previous capacity of only one classroom. Additionally, the building will feature spaces for archaeological and ethnographic exhibitions, as well as displays dedicated to local sculptor Sánchez Lozano.
Project Costs and Contracting
The contract for phases 1 and 3 was awarded on May 26, 2022, for a total of €6,605,947. The work is being carried out by a joint venture between Galicia S.A. and the Murcian firm Urdecon. However, the project has not been without controversy. In early 2024, the opposition PSOE party criticized the governing PP team for a €700,000 increase in the project’s budget, labeling it as an unjustified overpricing.
Plans for the Final Phase
The remaining phase of the CAMME project includes the construction of an auditorium and a conservatory. However, these additions have been temporarily postponed to focus on completing the current phases and other municipal initiatives. Moving forward, these developments will require adjustments to the General Urban Plan for land use near the existing buildings.
A Cultural Milestone for Pilar de la Horadada
With the opening of the new cultural complex, Pilar de la Horadada will gain a significant asset for both its residents and visitors. The CAMME promises to enhance the town’s cultural and educational landscape, cementing its status as a hub for tradition, art, and learning.
