The Socialist Party (PSOE) has ramped up its criticism following the Orihuela Mayor’s announcement of plans for a private company’s initiative to build a private hospital on Orihuela’s coast.
Socialist councillor Luis Quesada has condemned the move, stating that his party will submit a motion at the next plenary council meeting to formally oppose the proposal unveiled last week by the Mayor and the Urban Planning Councillor.
The proposal, submitted to the council by Ribera Salud, involves using public land for a private hospital. Quesada criticised the idea, stating, “This initiative attacks, degrades, and devalues healthcare, which is meant to be universal and for everyone.”
He said that a competent mayor would ask Ribera Salud, which has profited for years by managing Torrevieja Hospital, to give back to the community by donating the proposed hospital space instead of exploiting public land.
He also questioned why no one in the Partido Popular (PP) is asking Carlos Mazón, President of the Valencian Government, about the €11 million allocated by the previous Valencian Government for the expansion of Torrevieja Hospital. “I’ll tell you why: even if they expand the hospital, they won’t staff it or provide the necessary services,” Quesada said.
The PSOE strongly criticised Vegara’s government for prioritising public land for private businesses while failing to support the expansion of public healthcare in Orihuela Costa. He highlighted the loss of a €3 million investment for the expansion of the Orihuela Costa Health Centre due to Vegara’s inaction.
