A black car traveling at high speed was the subject of a dramatic accident on Saturday night after veering off the road and colliding with two advertising billboards. The incident occurred on the N-332, as the driver was heading towards Torrevieja.

Upon approaching the Alameda del Mar roundabout near the main access to the Cala Mosca construction site, the driver lost control of the vehicle and left the roadway. The car came to a stop after crashing into two billboards—one advertising a dental clinic and the other promoting a “low-cost” petrol station.

The Orihuela Local Police shared details of the accident on social media, noting not only the crash but also the status of the billboards. According to the police, the advertising structures “are not authorized” and had previously been reported for removal.

This incident highlights a broader issue in Orihuela regarding the proliferation of unauthorised commercial sign boards. Just last month, the City Council announced plans to begin removing dozens of illegal advertising structures, which have multiplied in recent years along the main roads of the Orihuela coastline. Many residents have voiced complaints about the visual clutter and safety concerns caused by these billboards.

Whilst the council announcement related to large billboards there is also a proliferation of much smaller signs, previously authorised by the Ayuntamiento, but now covered over by the Policia Local, on lamp posts and other vertical structures, across the whole of the Orihuela Costa, that are just as much, if not more of an eyesore than their larger counterparts.

The Valencian Anti-Fraud Agency had already urged the City Council to address the issue by either legalizing or demolishing the unauthorized advertising fences. This accident may add further urgency to efforts to enforce the removal of unapproved billboards in the area.
