Sunday 5th January 2025 saw 13 of us fishing El Bosquet – well, I say fishing, more ‘attended’ could be more appropriate in this instance!

It was a chilly start to the day – naturally, we are still only 5 days into the new year after all – but all were in good spirits and looking forward to our first ever league match, not just for 2025, but first ever.

To, hopefully, give everyone a fair crack of the whip, we used every stretch of water we could – we had the total venue to ourselves, so it makes sense to spread everyone about, no sense in cramming everyone in one long line or over two sections.

I am pleased to report that only one failed to catch, and that was from the hardest section – at the moment – of pegs 19/21/23…. however, the Shepshed magician, Dave “Hutch” Hutchinson made light work of winning (from the very favoured peg number 23), not just that section but the match overall with a cracking 16kg 950 grammes.

Well behind and it was more like a country mile behind was Yours Truly, Steve Higgins. I managed to coax 2 fish from peg 19 for 2kg 500grammes.

Close behind Hutch was the Mutton Jeff Cockney geezer Bill “Shotgun” Cannon who snaffled 16kg 140 grammes from peg 36.

That weight did, in fact double the weight of the former Seniors World Champion Harry Billing who came second in that section with 7kg 990grammes.

Pegs 1- 7 (Section A) is favoured by nigh on every angler visiting the complex, it is narrower than others and full of carp, bass, mullet and barbel. However, of late, it just isn’t producing weights as it used to, and it only needed 5kg 450 grammes from favoured peg 3 for John (Juggers) Havercroft to seal and easy section win ahead of Alan Frith who’s one lonesome fish went 1kg 700 grammes – caught with just 15 minutes to go!

The 4th section, the widest and deepest section in the complex, is the one many wanted (8 to 16) and the two end pegs 9 and 15 produced the top two.

Peg 15 saw John Waples make no mistake with 9kgs 400grammes and very close behind was Martin Fisher from the other end peg, number 9 with 7kg 9000grammes.

Our next match is Sunday the 26th of January.
