The City Council has confirmed that the redevelopment works on El Paseo will commence after Easter to avoid disrupting the processions. However, the project will not be funded by the ‘Next Generation’ European funds.

This information was relayed in a press release on Friday, following complaints from the opposition PSOE and questions raised in a plenary session by socialist councillor Isidro Grao to the councillor for Mercado, Noelia Grao (PP).

The Council also confirmed that the works will begin after Holy Week to avoid interference with the traditional processions, the Medieval Market, and other events. A meeting is scheduled for January 9 between Noelia Grao and the company awarded the contract to discuss execution terms.

In December, the City Council signed a contract with UTE Instalaciones Sánchez Mateos-Mistral 3000, who offered a bid of 567,389.69 euros (including VAT) with a four-month completion period.

The project had previously been presented twice by different municipal executives. It was first introduced in 2022 by then-councillor for Markets under Mayor Emilio Bascuñana, Víctor Bernabéu. It was later reintroduced by socialist councillor under Mayor Carolina Gracia, Ángel Luis Muñoz, who renamed it ‘Camino a la higuera’.

The current PP-Vox government team explained that the project would now be funded through municipal budgets due to the loss of European funds, which were received in July 2022 under the previous government.

The Council emphasised that steps are being taken with the Ministry to reimburse the funds, thereby avoiding additional late payment interest of 45,414.41 euros accumulated since July 2022.

The current councillor for Markets noted that, despite the project’s announcement in April 2023, its development was not “ready.” Significant deficiencies in the technical and administrative documentation were found, which needed correction to ensure the project’s viability. These issues delayed the progress required to put the project out for tender.

Noelia Grao added that while it’s easy to announce a project, the important thing is to have everything ready for execution, including the necessary budget, which was previously lacking.

She said that decisions made by the current government team are based on rigorous analysis to ensure the project’s execution and the availability of all necessary resources.
