In a press release issued by the Department of Infrastructure today (Tuesday) the Orihuela council writes, ‘This is a very busy road which connects the interior of the southern part of the Orihuela Costa with important residential and commercial areas,’ and yet it has taken over six months for the authorities to repair crash barriers along one of the most dangerous stretches of the road that has been without these necessary safety rails for all that time.

This is hardly an occasion for self-congratulation and yet the council departments of Infrastructure and the Coast seem to rejoice in the fact that the repairs of this particularly dangerous stretch of road, close to the entrance to Las Ramblas and Campoamor Golf Courses, have finally been carried out.

AVCRL, the Association of residents of Cabo Roig and Lomas – Orihuela Costa, continually denounced the highly dangerous section of this road, widely used by the drivers of Orihuela Costa, where there have been numerous accidents in recent years.

Motorists misjudging the bend at that point it would fall into a ravine of about 50 metres, with the risk of ending up in the canal de Riegos. AVCRL said that accidents are so frequent that they know that the Civil Guard Traffic officers have also made regular reports request that safety measures be urgently installed.

Rather that dole out congratulations, the Orihuela Council should hang their heads in shame at the length of time it has taken to rectify this dangerous situation for which the local residents have been appealing since before the start of last summer.
