Pilar de la Horadada is increasing its garbage tax to comply with new state and European regulations. The annual tax will rise from 132 euros to 152.97 euros on the coast and 147.13 euros in the urban centre.

This adjustment meets the requirements of Law 7/2022, which mandates that the tax covers the full cost of waste collection, transport, and recovery, encouraging a “pay-as-you-generate” system to promote recycling.

The new rates will take effect on 1 January, with collections now in two half-yearly payments instead of quarterly.

The increase is based on a study by Suma, considering factors like cadastral value and constructed surface. The study bizarrely finds that coastal properties, often second homes which are only occupied for part of the year, generate more waste, and thus face higher rates.

The coastline areas like Mil Palmeras and El Mojón are popular summer destinations, while inland areas like Lo Romero attract foreign residents.
