Guardamar is speeding up the urbanisation project for 1000 new properties on a wet area at the mouth of the Rio Segura, a project that has been heavly criticised by environmentalists.
Friends of the Wetlands of the South of Alicante (AHSA) has alleged that more than 90% of the sector has a high risk of erosion and more than a 45% risk of slippage, dangers that, in the opinion of AHSA, should discourage the urbanising process.
The site is located next to the protected wet area of the Segura River and has 40,000 square metres graded as a level 2 flooding risk according to the Territorial Action Plan against the Risk of Floods of the Generalitat (Patricova), which establishes six levels, of which 2 is the second most dangerous.
On Friday, following the AHSA criticism, José Luis Sáez (PSOE), the mayor of Guardamar del Segura, said that the processing of the urbanisation of the Rinconada, has been underway for many years and has not been suddently activated. We’re not heartless, he added, stating that each of the allegations that have been submitted to the public consultation of the plan, the deadline for submission of which was completed only a few days ago, will be answered.
Sáez pointed out that the processing of the urban plan, authorised since 2006, follows a regulated procedure that will not be approved if the reports of the surveyors, some from other administrations, are not favorable.
