As part of the 2025 Budget, the Government plans a 10-cent increase in the price of a litre of diesel from 1 April next year. This measure, which affects the hydrocarbon tax on diesel, would seek to align the price of diesel with that of petrol in Spain.

Diesel cars remain in the spotlight. Their sales have fallen sharply in recent years, they are being driven out of cities and will soon be affected by the 10-cent increase in the price of diesel per litre that the government is preparing from 2025, with the aim of bringing the price of diesel into line with that of petrol.

The price of fuel has been a hot topic in Spain for a couple of years, when the cost of filling up the tank skyrocketed, reaching over 2 euros per litre for both diesel and petrol. Now, the latest measure that Pedro Sánchez’s government wants to approve includes an increase in the hydrocarbon tax, although it will only affect diesel.

This move has now been registered in Congress through amendments to the Bill establishing a Complementary Tax to guarantee a minimum global level of taxation.

This means that the aim would be to equate the price of diesel to that of petrol, between which there is currently a difference of just over 10-euro cents per litre at the pumps.

The hydrocarbon tax on automotive diesel will rise by 9.37 cents per litre, with the general rate rising from 0.307 euros to 0.40069 euros. However, the measure, which would form part of the accompanying fiscal law for a potential 2025 Budget, would exclude professionals from the increase.
