Murcia’s authorities have detected 421 unlicensed tourist home rentals in the past few months of the year and have now opened disciplinary proceedings on 36.

Based on the results of their inspections, the Autonomous Community has contacted the main online marketing platforms requesting the removal of their advertisements as they registered in the official registry of tourist accommodation.

According to a statement from the Autonomous Community, this year there has been a rapid increase in the detection of illegal accommodation, going from 150 in the first phase since the creation of the table in 2023, to 235 in the second and 421 in this last period.

Fines for property owners range from 20,001 to 40,000 euros for such infractions and while tourists could also be fined if they book an illegal rental, they could arrive in Spain to find their accommodation has been shut down and they have to find alternative accommodation.

The use of unregulated and unlisted tourist apartments should be further highlighted in 2026, when a European directive will require all of the online booking platforms to check for licences before a rental advert may be published.
