Alicante Province has experienced a significant increase in heat-related deaths this summer. According to the State Meteorological Agency, the average temperature has been exceptionally high, making 2024 the third warmest summer in the last 70 years. The deadliest month was August, with 101 deaths attributed to heat.
The elderly population, particularly those over 65, were most vulnerable to the extreme temperatures. The Daily Mortality Monitoring System (MoMo) estimated the number of heat-related deaths based on temperature data, population statistics, and civil registry records.
While the data provides insights into excess mortality due to heat, it’s important to note that the figures are estimates. The heatwave has been characterized by increasingly warm nights, leading to more tropical nights than in previous years.
To mitigate risks associated with high temperatures, the Ministry of Health recommends avoiding direct sun exposure during peak hours, staying hydrated, protecting vulnerable individuals, using sunscreen, exercising during cooler times, and never leaving anyone in a parked car.
