The Department of Tourism has introduced a special programme of routes for the month of September, framed within the festivity of Our Lady of Monserrate. This programme includes a combination of classic and new routes, offering the opportunity to explore the cultural, historical and natural wealth of the municipality.
The Councillor for Tourism, Gonzalo Montoya, highlighted the importance of these routes in the context of the patron saint festivities: ‘September in Orihuela comes hand in hand with Our Lady of Monserrate during her patron saint festivities for which we have organised a series of routes focused on the history, heritage, culture and image surrounding the Virgin of Orihuela. These routes will be run along many other classics such as those dedicated to our universal poet, Miguel Hernandez, or the nature of Orihuela Costa.
The programme will begin on Sunday 1 September with the route ‘Miguel, the Poet Cabrero’, a route through the orchard of Orihuela that explores the literary origins of Miguel Hernandez, along with the environment and landscape of the Orihuela orchard.
On Wednesday 4 September there will be a route through the hills of Campoamor, a scenic trail through both the golf course in the hills and the coast.
In celebrating the patron saint festivities, five heritage and cultural routes have been prepared in the historic centre of Orihuela, which will take place from Monday 9 September until Thursday 19 September. These routes will display different monuments and historical and artistic curiosities of the historic centre, along with a visit to the convent of Santa Ana and the Sanctuary of Monserrate on Monday 16 September.
The month will end with four innovative routes, including a bicycle route to the waterwheels at Norias on Friday 27 September, and the ‘Visit to the Almazara del Tío José María’, which is an 18th century olive oil mill that holds the essence of all olive oil production, on Saturday 28 September.
Montoya has also called for maximum participation from everyone, locals and outsiders, to participate in these routes which have classic Orihuela culture, nature, coast and are dedicated to the history, heritage, culture and identity around the image of the patron María Santísima de Monserrate’.
The routes will be available weekly. To book the routes, please go to the website [www.orihuelaturistica.es] or contact via WhatsApp at 673 836 385.
