Eighty-five years after the death of the renowned Spanish poet and playwright, Miguel Hernández Gilabert, in Alicante prison, a group of over 200 supporters, including many members of his family, are calling for a full pardon for Orihuela’s most famous son who, in 1939 was sentenced to death, later commuted to 30 years in jail.

Similar appeals have been turned down on 2 previous occasions but now, with over two hundred extremely eminent parties, many of them senior government officials, as signatories of the appeal, all stating that his imprisonment was based on ideological aspects at the time, it is hoped that this latest submission will be successful and may be delivered on the anniversary of the poets birth in Orihuela on 30 October 2024.
