Spanish airports grow by more than 10% in the year until July, exceeding 176 million passengers, and on the Costa Blanca, Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández broke the previous record for the total passengers in a month of July, reaching almost two million passengers.
Specifically, Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport received a total of 1,989,648 passengers in July, 16.1% more than in the same month last year, according to data released this Monday by Aena. This is the best month in the history of the airport in terms of passenger traffic, a milestone that was reached in June and which has been surpassed by this new record.
As for flights, Alicante airport recorded the best month in its history with 12,139 operations managed, 14.7% more than the same month in 2023 and 9.68% more than in July 2019, the previous record month for movements.
International passengers continue to be the majority with 1,725,806 travellers recorded in commercial operations, which represents an increase of 16.3%. Domestic traffic also stands out for its increase and records 261,853 passengers, which represents an increase of 15.6%, all of this with respect to commercial traffic and in relation to the previous year.
By nationality, the countries that contributed the most international passengers in July 2024 were the United Kingdom, with 643,033 travellers; followed by Norway, with 126,849; Germany, with 117,378; the Netherlands, with 107,395; and France, with 95,849.
During the first seven months of the year, Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport handled a total of 10,330,799 passengers, 17.6% more than in the same period in 2023. In relation to operations, in the first seven months of the year the Alicante infrastructure operated a total of 64,940 flights, 15.1% more than in the same months of the previous year.
Across Spain, the airports in the Aena network in Spain have closed the seventh month of 2024 with a historic record of passengers and aircraft movement in a month of July, thus maintaining the upward trend since the beginning of the year and for much of last year.
In July 2024, Aena welcomed 31,900,662 passengers, 7.2% more than in the same month in 2023; it managed 259,841 aircraft movements, 7.3% more than in 2023; and 106,659 tonnes of cargo were transported, 22.9% more than last year.
In the year to date, across the Euro Control network, emissions from flight stand at 98.7 million tonnes of CO2, an increase of 10% compared to last year, whereas the emissions per flight have increased by 4% to 22,4 tonnes of CO2 per departure.
