A 70 year old man has died from drowning in Playa Flamenca on the Orihuela-Costa.
As reported by the Emergency Information and Co-ordination Center (EICC), a 70 year old man drowned early this afternoon in Orihuela. He was pulled unconscious from the water on Flamenca beach. The incident occured during the early evening hours on Thursday, 11 May 2023.
A SAMU unit rushed to the scene where the medical team performed advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other stabilization techniques on the 70-year-old man. They were unable to get a response and the man was pronounced dead.
This particular beach is well-known for strong currents and the original thought is that the man got pulled under by a strong undercurrent.
Earlier today Orihuela Mayor, Caroline Gracia, collected 11 blue flags which have been awarded to Orihuela-Costa for the cleanliness and good management of the beaches.

However, many locals have been confused by the decision of the European Foundation for Environmental Education as, in their opinion, the beaches do not even provide the basic services such as toilets, lifeguards, and beach bars.
A Facebook post from one local Facebook user:
Roughly translated:
“11 right?
Well, hang one on the illegal advertising posters of La Regia and Aguamarina that the sindic de greuges has required them to withdraw for being illegal and they have taken 2 years to remove them (2 less).
Another in La Mosca cove for its destruction.
Another one on the Cabo Roig boulevard that they left a mess.
Another can be hung on the bridges of the national highway in honor of the illegal pubs that operate without a license and nobody does anything.
You can hang another one in the street cleaning service that is the whole area full of rotten oranges
Another at the pest control service that hasn’t been fumigated for years and is eaten by the tiger mosquito.
Another one in the toilets on the beaches, oh no, sorry, there is no toilet
Another one in the showers, oh no, sorry, there are no showers
Another can be hung in the promised library that was never made
Another in the flora and fauna micro-reserves destroyed by construction, noise and light pollution.
And the last one that they break it into 3 pieces and keep it between citizens, the pp and them because they have shown that it does not matter who governs that on the coast the problems are the same as always.
Ale. Distributed! On the beaches that do not put any that do not deserve them in the state they are in.”
