A section of the main coastal road serving the Alicante province is to be closed for a week for roadworks.
Work has been taking place on the N-332 between Calpe and Altea for a number of weeks, but in order to facilitate the work at the Mascarat tunnels, the road will have to be closed.
Specifically, from Sunday May 14 to Sunday May 21, work will be carried out that affects the entire section of the N-332 in the area of the Mascarat tunnels, closing the road to traffic between kilometre points 164+700 and 165+500.
Due to this closure, users must use the AP-7 motorway as an alternative route to the N-332, from the Altea-Calpe link (exit 64) to the Benissa-Teulada-Gata de Gorgos link (exit 63). The cut of the N-332 road and the alternative route will be signposted, both on the N-332 itself, and at exits 63 and 64 of the AP-7.
The accesses from the N-332 to Maryvilla and the Barranc Salat area will be open and the residents of these areas will be able to circulate without problems, as highlighted by the Calpe City Council in a statement. Thus, they insist that the only restriction is traffic to Altea on the N-332.
The works, included in the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan and financed with NextGeneration funds, are aimed at adapting these infrastructures to the safety and road requirements established in European regulations.
The Ministry of Transport, Mobility and the Urban Agenda explained in May 2022 that this operation “has a budget of 357 million euro to adapt the tunnels to European regulations.” In this way, they added, it is also intended to “enhance the protection of wildlife and vulnerable users.” The financed actions that have been included in this plan will focus on improving emergency exits, signage, beaconing, lighting and electrical installations.
These works in the Mascarat tunnels are included in the package of actions of the Ministry in the province of Alicante. Other towns also include modernisation works and improvement of road and circulation conditions in the tunnels of the district of El Altet and El Campello. To carry them out, within that aforementioned budget, 1.2 million euro are available.
