Torrevieja has exceeded 113,000 registered inhabitants, consolidating its status as one of Spain’s most dynamic, multicultural and fast-growing coastal cities.

According to the latest municipal register data, updated this week, Torrevieja now has 113,453 registered residents, marking an increase of more than 7,100 people since the beginning of the year. That means the city has been gaining an average of around 60 new residents every day, a striking figure that reflects Torrevieja’s continuing appeal to both Spanish and international residents.

The latest total is made up of 56,126 men and 57,327 women, and represents growth of around 6.6% in just 125 days. At the start of January, Torrevieja City Council reported approximately 106,000 registered inhabitants.

For the local government, the figures confirm Torrevieja’s growing importance as one of the municipalities with the strongest population growth in Spain and one of the most multicultural communities in the country.

A city attracting residents from across the world

Torrevieja’s international profile continues to strengthen. Of the city’s 113,453 registered inhabitants, 51,432 are Spanish nationals, while more than 62,000 are foreign residents from dozens of countries.

The Ukrainian community remains the largest foreign population group, with 10,787 registered residents. It is followed by the Colombian community, which has grown significantly and now stands at 5,892 residents, placing it second for the first time.

The Russian community is now in third place with 5,834 registered residents, having increased by almost 800 people over the last year despite the economic restrictions and sanctions linked to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Other major international communities include the British population, with 4,671 residents, and the Moroccan community, with 3,743 residents.

Torrevieja also maintains a strong European presence, including residents from Sweden, Romania, Belgium, Bulgaria, Italy, Germany and Poland, further reinforcing the city’s reputation as a truly international municipality.

Municipal register ahead of official INE figure

The latest municipal figure contrasts with the most recent official population number published by Spain’s National Institute of Statistics, the INE, which still places Torrevieja below the 100,000 threshold, at 98,553 residents.

However, the sharp increase recorded in the local register suggests that the official INE figure is likely to rise significantly when the next update is published.

Between January and March alone, the City Council processed 3,568 new registrations, showing the intensity of the demographic growth currently taking place.

Administrative services under pressure from rapid growth

The rise in population has also brought a major increase in activity for Torrevieja’s Census and Statistics Department.

During the first quarter of the year, municipal staff processed:

1,603 changes of address,
1,879 renewals for foreign citizens,
357 confirmations of residence for long-term foreign residents,
1,327 personal data modifications, and
554 address corrections.

In the same period, the department issued 10,589 certificates, making it one of the busiest public-facing services within Torrevieja City Council.

The workload intensified further in April 2026, coinciding with the start of the extraordinary regularisation process for undocumented migrants. During that month, 1,355 new residents were added to the municipal register.

Certificate requests also rose sharply, with 8,167 certificates issued in April alone, an increase of 3,734 compared with March.

The figures highlight the scale of the administrative effort required to manage the city’s fast-changing population.

Growth brings opportunity — and new challenges

Torrevieja’s population boom reinforces its position as one of the most attractive and active municipalities in the province of Alicante and the Valencian Community.

The city’s combination of coastal lifestyle, international community, services and residential appeal continues to draw new residents at an exceptional pace.

However, this rapid demographic expansion also increases pressure on public services. Areas such as healthcare, waste collection, education, public administration and urban infrastructure face growing demand.

Education remains one of the most visible challenges. In recent years, Torrevieja has had to rely on several schools operating from prefabricated classrooms, including primary schools numbers 14, 15 and 16, as well as IES Number 6.

Despite these pressures, the latest population data confirms a clear trend: Torrevieja is growing, diversifying and strengthening its position as one of the most important residential centres on the Costa Blanca.

Torrevieja’s growth is not only numerical. It is also social, cultural and economic. The city is becoming larger, more diverse and more internationally connected — a transformation that is reshaping its present and defining its future.
