The organisation DEBRA Butterfly Children has announced the closure of its charity shop located at Avd. del Mar, 2, Pueblo Bravo. This decision comes after a detailed review of the shop’s financial performance in recent years.
The charity explains: “This is a very difficult and emotional decision, as it was the first shop we opened in Spain. However, considering the financial situation, it is the most responsible option for the cause.” In this regard, they highlight that the impact of Brexit, the COVID-19 crisis, and the decline in sales in recent years have led them to take this decision.
Despite this, DEBRA emphasises the vital role played by the volunteer team over the years, who have become like a family. The organisation recognises the work of those who have led the shop throughout this time and also expresses “deep gratitude to everyone who has supported the cause by shopping, donating and volunteering at our Quesada Charity Shop, as well as to all the businesses and partners who have organised fundraising initiatives and events.”
Funds raised through the Butterfly Children Charity Shops enable DEBRA to support families living with Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB), also known as Butterfly Skin, through a health and social care team. Since opening its first shop in Quesada, when the team consisted of just one nurse and one psychologist, the organisation has grown to include five nurses, four psychologists, three social workers, one research coordinator, and a network of ten charity shops across Spain, supporting more than 363 families affected by the condition, 20 of whom are in Alicante.
Following the closure, the Quesada shop will no longer accept donations. The organisation encourages continued support through its charity shop in San Fulgencio (C/ Luis de Góngora, Unit 37), as well as in its other shops located in Madrid, Málaga, Valencia, Seville, Alicante and Barcelona, or via its online sales channel on Wallapop.
The charity reiterates its gratitude to the committed community that has supported the cause over the years, whose contribution has been essential in continuing to improve the quality of life of families living with Butterfly Skin.
