Torrevieja, April 17, 2026 — Torrevieja City Council has provisionally awarded a 10-year concession to redevelop the iconic “La Plasa” market, paving the way for a major transformation into a modern traditional and gastronomic food hub.
Murcia-based company ORIGEN MURCIA, S.A. will manage the site under an annual fee of €56,300, investing close to €1 million into the project. Once finalised, the company will oversee both the traditional market and a new gastromarket spread across more than 2,000 square metres on the ground floor and mezzanine.
230 Jobs and a New City Centre Hotspot
The ambitious redevelopment is expected to create around 230 jobs, positioning La Plasa as a key driver of economic activity in Torrevieja’s town centre.
Mayor Eduardo Dolón said the goal is to turn the market into a vibrant, all-day destination:
“We want it to become a lively meeting point, open throughout the day — not a space that shuts at midday — attracting visitors and boosting the local economy.”
Blending Tradition with Modern Dining
The revamped market will combine:
- Fresh, locally sourced produce
- Gourmet food offerings
- Innovative dining spaces
The concept follows successful models seen in cities like Madrid, Seville, and Murcia.
Importantly, the council has pledged to preserve the traditional market, offering favourable conditions for existing traders to continue operating.
Upper Floors Still Under Review
The upper levels of the building are not included in the current concession. The council will launch a separate process to determine their future use, with proposals including:
- A multi-purpose events hall
- Cultural and gastronomic events space (such as hosting the DESAL festival)
Officials have stressed that no disruptive or nuisance activities will be introduced.
Opening Timeline
If work continues on schedule, the new-look La Plasa market could open by late 2026 or early 2027.
Dolón concluded:
“This is a key opportunity to revitalise the heart of Torrevieja — bringing people in, boosting spending, and energising the entire area.”
