Spain — A surge in Covid and flu cases has prompted Spanish health authorities to consider reintroducing mandatory face masks in hospitals, health centres, and other crowded indoor spaces. Health chiefs are expected to make a decision on December 3 amid fears that this season’s flu epidemic, driven by the H3N2 virus, has arrived four to seven weeks earlier than usual.
Spain’s Minister of Health, Mónica García, stressed the importance of the new measures, urging local communities to prioritize public health over politics. “Anyone with cold symptoms should responsibly wear a mask,” she said, adding that masks will be mandatory in high-risk scenarios, such as hospitals, nursing homes, and healthcare facilities.
Andalusia issued a new order on Monday recommending masks for staff and users in public and private health and social care centres while in the Valencian community the Ministry of Health has recommended the use of face masks in hospitals and clinics as a precaution despite the region currently being at a low epidemic level (787.8 cases per 100,000 inhabitants last week).
The Valencian guidance advises surgical masks for Symptomatic individuals in shared public or healthcare spaces, Healthcare professionals treating symptomatic patients, everyone in high-risk areas, such as chemotherapy units, transplant wards, ICUs, and emergency departments.
Asturias, Castilla y León, the Valencian Community, and Galicia have also announced updated mask guidelines. In general, the rules advise healthcare workers in contact with vulnerable citizens, and anyone showing flu symptoms, to wear masks in health and social care settings.
Minister García highlighted the simplicity of the measure: “You arrive at a health centre, put on your mask, leave the centre, take it off. You protect patients, professionals, and yourself.”
The early arrival of this season’s flu epidemic has raised concerns about hospital capacity, as authorities work to protect both staff and patients while controlling the spread of respiratory illnesses.
