The Torrevieja City Council has granted environmental permits for the construction of a Bauhaus DIY store and two supermarkets, including one operated by Consum, in the La Hoya urban development area. These businesses will be part of a 100,000-square-meter commercial zone within a large-scale project that will feature over 7,000 homes. The site is located parallel to the CV-905 highway, between San Luis and Jardín del Mar-Doña Inés.
Bauhaus, a German multinational specializing in home improvement, hardware, DIY, and garden products, faced delays of more than a year after competitor Leroy Merlin, which operates two stores in Orihuela Costa, successfully appealed the initial license granted in August 2024. Leroy Merlin argued that the mandatory public consultation process had been bypassed.
The court sided with them, revoking the permit and requiring the City Council to restart the authorization procedure. Following proper public consultation, Bauhaus has now obtained the license and can begin construction.
The planned Bauhaus store will occupy an 18,000-square-meter building on a 40,000-square-meter plot in Sector 20 of La Hoya, situated near the stormwater retention basin. Heavy rains last October highlighted the need for improved drainage, prompting the developer, in coordination with the City Council, to accelerate works connecting the reservoir to evacuation collectors in Las Torretas.
Torrevieja Mayor Eduardo Dolón met with Bauhaus executives in September 2024, expressing appreciation for the company’s decision to establish its first store in the Alicante province, which is expected to generate numerous direct and indirect jobs.
The case also exposed a broader administrative oversight, as the City Council had previously failed to display environmental licenses publicly for several projects, including a gas station now in operation for nearly three years. With these licenses now properly exhibited, Torrevieja aims to ensure compliance with environmental and procedural requirements moving forward.
Bauhaus, with 250 stores across 20 countries and 12 in Spain, is set to bring its first Alicante presence to Torrevieja, marking a significant development in the region’s growing commercial landscape.
