Torrevieja, Costa Blanca – As beachgoers begin flocking to Torrevieja’s coastline ahead of the summer high season, local officials and residents have raised concerns over delays in the full installation of essential beach services, including safety beacons, beach bars, and sunbed and umbrella rentals.

The municipal group Sueña Torrevieja has highlighted a 46-day delay in the implementation of the safety beaconing system, which is crucial for clearly separating bathing zones from boating areas. The delay stems from a decision by the Contracting Committee on May 16 to return the project to its tender evaluation phase, following an audit report noting discrepancies in six evaluation criteria.

Councillor Pablo Samper warned that this situation may pose an avoidable safety risk to swimmers, particularly during periods of high visitor numbers like Easter and the upcoming summer holidays. The lack of designated swim zones, he explained, increases the chance of dangerous interactions between bathers and watercraft.

With beaches already experiencing high footfall, Sueña Torrevieja has urged the local government to expedite the finalization of beach infrastructure to ensure the safety and comfort of all visitors. The group expressed frustration over what they describe as “mismanagement” of essential seasonal preparations.

In the meantime, visitors are advised to exercise caution, especially in areas where maritime boundaries have not yet been visibly marked, and to respect temporary signage and lifeguard instructions as installations are completed.
