Discover the natural and cultural heritage of San Pedro del Pinatar with a free guided walk on April 18, exploring the iconic salt flats, the historic windmills of Quintín and Calcetera, and the area’s famous mud baths.
Situated between the Mar Menor and the Mediterranean Sea, the salt flats are a unique ecosystem. Their shallow pools are filled through a network of gravity-fed channels and two pumping stations—housed inside the windmills of Quintín and Calcetera. These windmills are more than just picturesque landmarks; they are officially recognized as Buildings of Cultural Interest, symbolizing the area’s rich history of traditional salt production.
The tour offers a fascinating look at how these windmills once powered the salt industry and continues through the surrounding landscape to the nearby storage pool by Molino de Quintín. This is also where visitors will find the region’s well-known therapeutic mud baths—long celebrated for their natural healing properties and one of the early draws for tourism in the area.
The walk begins at 5:00 PM at the Molino de Quintín and is expected to last approximately three hours, covering a total distance of 5.4 kilometers. It’s a relaxed and educational experience, perfect for nature lovers, history enthusiasts, or anyone looking to explore one of the region’s most charming spots.
Participants are encouraged to register online in advance. Comfortable footwear is essential, and it’s recommended to wear neutral-colored clothing to avoid disturbing the local birdlife. Bringing drinking water and binoculars will enhance your experience, especially with the chance to observe the area’s diverse bird species up close.
