On March 6, over 50 fifth-grade students from schools in Almoradí, Orihuela, Callosa de Segura, and Cox will participate in the 5th Vega Baja Artichoke School Olympics at Almoradí’s Sadrián Stadium.
A Fun and Educational Tribute to the “Jewel of the Orchard”
Organized by the Vega Baja Artichoke Association in collaboration with the Almoradí City Council, the event combines sports, games, and educational activities to teach students about the cultural and economic importance of the artichoke in the region.
Events include:
A relay race where students pass an artichoke instead of a baton.
Throwing competitions, mimicking javelin events but with artichokes.
Basket toss, where students aim for a container used by farmers.
Educational challenges, such as math problems related to artichoke production and a true-or-false quiz about the crop.
Creative activities, including an artichoke rap, a peeling competition, and a giant board game.
Strengthening Local Identity and Tradition
Antonio Ángel Hurtado, president of the Vega Baja Artichoke Association, emphasized the event’s goal of helping children connect with this regional staple in a fun and memorable way.
Almoradí’s mayor, María Gómez, highlighted how the event promotes teamwork, agricultural heritage, and regional pride in a playful and engaging manner. She also noted that the School Olympics serve as a prelude to the National Artichoke Congress, taking place March 8-9 in Almoradí, which will feature special activities for children.
