AGAMED, the water cycle concessionaire in Torrevieja, is executing a €3.9 million project at the port aimed at intercepting rainwater from higher elevations within the Rambla Juan Mateo sub-basin.
Torrevieja Mayor Eduardo Dolón, along with AGAMED’s general manager Jorge Ballesta and deputy manager Gemma Cruz, visited the construction site today. This initiative is a key component of the city’s ambitious hydraulic infrastructure plan, integrating cutting-edge technology to protect the marine environment while ensuring the sustainable expansion of Torrevieja’s urban development.
Next-Generation Hydrodynamic Separators
The project includes the installation of three high-efficiency hydrodynamic separators, designed to remove pollutants from rainwater before it is discharged into the sea. This initiative, the largest of its kind in Eastern Spain, will be completed next week.
These advanced separators effectively eliminate floating debris, settleable solids, and hydrocarbons in a single process, significantly reducing the amount of pollutants reaching the bay. Connected to the new stormwater drainage system, they will operate in parallel to ensure thorough treatment before water is released. This marks a significant step forward in sustainable urban water management, reinforcing Torrevieja’s commitment to environmental preservation and clean coastal waters.
The input collectors for the three Ø3000 mm treatment units will be connected to a chamber located at the end of Plaza Capdepont. The output collectors from each hydrodynamic separator will then merge into a single Ø1000 mm PVC collector, directing the treated water to its discharge point.
By filtering pollutants before they reach the sea, these separators will not only enhance water quality but also protect marine life, bolster the appeal of Torrevieja’s beaches, and support environmentally responsible tourism.
Stormwater Drainage Route
The stormwater collector system will connect to the existing network at the end of the designated street before continuing through Plaza Capdepont. Along its route, the pipeline will strategically cross Paseo de La Libertad, extending towards the former Maritime Captaincy building.
The design has carefully accounted for the presence of commercial structures within the upcoming leisure complex, ensuring no interference with its foundations. The system will then make a final turn to connect with the existing outfall, completing an efficient rainwater management circuit for the city.
This project represents a major technological and environmental milestone, reinforcing Torrevieja’s dedication to sustainable urban development and coastal conservation.
