At his trial in Madrid, Luis Rubiales, the former president of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), has denied allegations of sexual assault and coercion related to his kiss of footballer Jenni Hermoso during the 2023 Women’s World Cup final medal ceremony.

In his court testimony, Rubiales asserted that the kiss was consensual, claiming that Hermoso had given her approval when he asked, “a little kiss?” He described the act as a spontaneous gesture of joy, akin to celebrating with a friend.

Rubiales acknowledged that his conduct was inappropriate, admitting that he should not have let his emotions lead to such a gesture, especially given his institutional position. He expressed regret for his actions but maintained that they did not constitute a criminal offense. He also denied orchestrating a strategy to pressure Hermoso into downplaying the incident, refuting claims that he had led efforts to coerce her into issuing a statement minimizing the situation.

The incident has sparked widespread controversy, with Hermoso asserting that the kiss was non-consensual and left her feeling vulnerable and victimized. She has testified that she did not give permission for the kiss and described Rubiales’ actions as impulsive and sexist.

The prosecution is seeking a sentence of two and a half years in prison. Additionally, former RFEF officials, including ex-coach Jorge Vilda and marketing director Rubén Rivera, are facing charges for their alleged roles in pressuring Hermoso.

The case, which started on 3 February, has ignited significant debate in Spain. It is expected to conclude in Spain’s National Court on 19 February.
