On Thursday morning, Orihuela held an extraordinary session of the Tourism Sector Council in the auditorium of the María Moliner Public Library. The meeting, presided over by Deputy Mayor Manuel Mestre Barea, served as the platform for presenting the EDIL Plan to council members. This strategic initiative aims to drive the municipality’s development through projects valued at over 20 million euros, funded by European grants.

The Tourism Sector Council is composed of representatives from various organizations, including the Valencian Tourism Agency, the Directorate General of Commerce of the Generalitat, the Provincial Council of Alicante, the Costa Blanca Tourism Board, municipal government councilors, political party representatives from the City Council, and numerous local institutions and associations.

These include the Junta Mayor of Brotherhoods and Fraternities of Holy Week, the Association of Moors and Christians Festivals Santas Justa and Rufina, the Chamber of Commerce, local gastronomic associations, Orihuela’s trade association, golf course representatives, the Museum of Sacred Art, the Fernando de Loaces Chair, the Diocesan School of Santo Domingo, the Miguel Hernández Foundation, Ociopía Shopping Centre, Zenia Boulevard Shopping Centre, Miguel Hernández University, ASEMVEGA, the Ahyet Hospitality Association, and representatives from each district board.

The Orihuela Integrated Local Development Strategy, which was submitted to the European Commission in December last year, is set to participate in the upcoming round of European funding applications. This strategy consists of a series of integrated proposals aimed at transforming Orihuela by promoting sustainability, efficient mobility, and urban environment improvements.

One of the key initiatives highlighted in the plan is the regeneration of the town’s historic centre. The proposed measures focus on urban renewal, social revitalization, strengthening social cohesion among disadvantaged groups, improving resilience to flooding, and enhancing overall livability.

Following the meeting, the City Council will launch a public survey from Friday, February 7, to Friday, February 12, on its official website. This survey will allow residents to provide input on projects funded by European grants that are specifically aimed at improving the most disadvantaged neighbourhoods in the municipality.
