The Quirónsalud Hospital of Torrevieja has launched another of its free campaigns for the early detection of prostate cancer to mark the World Day of this disease, which is celebrated on 15 September . The initiative provides free tests and consultations for men aged from 45 years or 40 if they have a family history.

The tests will take place by appointment from 12-16 September by either calling 966 92 57 61, email to prevencion.trv@quironsalud.es or via the web http://www.quironsalud.es/torrevieja/es

The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness about the importance of prevention and early detection of this disease, 90% of cases of which can be cured.

The tests themselves are understood to be simple blood tests which measures PSA, a molecule known to be a marker for prostrate cancer, the second most common cancer in men in the world and the first in Europe.

Head of the Urology Unit Quirónsalud Dr. Sven Petry says that about 25,000 new cases are diagnosed in Spain every year, 90% of which, with early detection, can be cured.

Except in advanced stages, the disease rarely produces any symptoms; hence the importance of the PSA test, which allows for the early detection.
